Illegal immigrants must be better treated

Trinbagonians travel and live all over the world, we should treat immigrants good or expect to face reprisal. Far too long we have been hearing numerous complaints against the prisons and immigration authorities about bad treatment when being detained.

On April 26, 1993 Justice Shafeyei Shah (retired) ordered the state to pay costs to four chinese nationals for a habeas corpus matter filed in the Port-of-Spain High Court. However, Justice Shah refused to grant bail to the four applicants because the affidavit filed on their behalf had insufficient evidence on which he could act.

An application for bail was made before another judge in chambers, Sue Jin Kong, Sue Jin Yee, Young Lui Kei, and Young Chin Chuan had been in custody for weeks without charges being laid against them.
