Girl Guides Commissioner:
GIRL GUIDE CHIEF COMMISSIONER, Annetta Alexander, appealed to young girls “to come and join the Girl Guide Movement as it helps to chart an excellent course through life.”
She was delivering the feature address at the Annual Recruitment and Retention Ceremony of the Trinidad and Tobago Girl Guides Association at Gilbert Park, California, yesterday.
The commissioner made the appeal against the background of the abuse taking place in the country in which young people were involved and said that “when we give ourselves and our time, we reap rich rewards far beyond what we can give; indeed we receive a better world.”
She said, “we gather here today to celebrate and to highlight a wonderful worldwide movement , which started in 1914, and to which we all belong.”
This movement “helps in the development of the young women and the girls of our country and it strikes at the heart of volunteerism , a word which means so little to many adults.”
She said that they were not in Guiding for high pay, easy hours, parents’ gratitude, power or prestige “but we want the world for our girls — a world that they can share and shape, a world of love, and laughter where they can show compassion.”
