Sadness at Arima, shot groom dies

Edwards was reportedly shot twice when he went to answer two bandits who came enquiring about his stepson.

His death follows closely on that of noted turfite Joseph Maurice Quesnel who was an owner/breeder/administrator. He died at his Diego Martin home on Thursday last at age 83.

Strangely, Edwards was the groom of Bookmakers Association Guineas Stakes pre-race favourite Sara’s Music.

And the son of Java In Flight/Indian Music had a sharp gallop together with stablemates Late Cut and American-bred Stravinskys Secret, looking every inch a pre-race favourite in completing the trip in 35.97 seconds.

Danse De Cocoa, engaged in the three-year-old maiden sprint over 1200 metres, had Suave Runner for company and also looked very good in a 600 metres run in 35.58 seconds.

Carib Timean entrant in the Eric “Colt” Durant Memorial Turf Handicap showed some dash in a good 600 metres run, having the better of Alfie Meh Boy timed in 35.97 seconds on the turf course.

Trainers had a very fast and dry track oin which to wind up the preparation of their charges for the Bookmakers Association-sponsored Indian Arrival Day programme on Tuesday.

With the weather holding fine, Santa Rosa Park is expected to be thronged with turfites on Indian Arrival Day holiday, and it is hoped the betting facilities are in tune to handle the big flow of traffick.
