SWWTU to Plipdeco:
The Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union (SWWTU) is calling on the Point Lisas Industrial Development Company (Plipdeco) to hire a private consultant to be part of a probe into the death of port worker Wayne La Mont.
La Mont, a terminal worker, died after being struck by a container handler at berth five at the Pt Lisas port on Sunday.
Plipdeco, in a statement Sunday, said an investigation is to be done and a SWWTU member is to be part of the team.
SWWTU president Michael Annisette yesterday said the union has urged Plipdeco to hire a private consultant to examine the equipment that was involved in the accident.
He confirmed the union’s participation in the probe and once again called on Government to implement the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
Annisette also expressed dissatisfaction with Plipdeco’s injury and disability compensation package which he said was inadequate for relatives of workers involved in industrial accidents.
Plipdeco’s human resources manager Brian Jones said the company was committed to a thorough probe and has offered counselling services for La Mont’s wife and daughter. Plipdeco is helping the family with the funeral arrangements.
