Pan Appreciation for nurses
Every Tuesday and Thursday 36 nurses from the Port-of-Spain General Hospital and 14 From St Ann’s Hospital down their instruments and make the trip to the pan yard.
Tutored by one of the most qualified music teachers in Trinidad Merle Albino De Coteau these nurses are on a five-week course in Pan Appreciation. According to Albino De Coteau, “They are learning the instrument as well as how much pan players go through to present such good music to the public. This will give them a better sense of whom and what players are and why they get involve in the pan.”
The Pan Appreciation course is part of the nurses’ training as they will have to interact with patients from all walks of life.
When we visited Invaders pan yard on Thursday afternoon the PoSGH nurses were hard at practice. Their song of choice was “Let There Be Peace On Earth” their session ran from 1-3 p.m.
When the St Ann’s nurses took to their pans they were brave enough to do the National Anthem after which they started working on “Brazil.”
When the nurses complete their Pan Appreciation course there will be a graduation ceremony.
Here are some highlights from the pan yard.
