Murder accused walks free

Justice Larry Lalla instructed the jury to return a not guilty verdict in favour of Kevin Regis.

Regis, 29, of Windy Hill, Arouca was charged with the April 23, 2003 murder of Anthony “Bokey” Jules.

According to State attorney Candia James, the State’s case was based solely on the evidence of the only eye witness Antonio Nunes, especially his identification of the accused. However, she continued, under cross-examination by defence attorney Keith Scotland, Nunes’ evidence proved to be “manifestly unreliable.”

He was unsure of whether Regis was in the car or outside the car when Jules was shot.

The acquitted man and the deceased were reportedly passengers in the back seat of Nunes’ car when Jules was shot in the head.

James said Nunes’ evidence was apparently shaken in cross-examination and, in the interest of justice, she did not think the case should go before the jury on his evidence.

According to Nunes’ evidence, he had been hired by Jules on the fateful day to pick up Regis. He said after he had picked up Regis, he drove the duo to Mann Street, Arouca.

Nunes said as he turned into Mann Street he heard a loud explosion and heard Jules scream, “What is that one boy?” The witness said when he turned around Jules was bleeding from the head and Regis had the gun pointed at him (Nunes).

He said he ran until he came to a KFC outlet on the Eastern Main Road, where he spoke with a security guard.

He said he returned to the scene and found Jules bleeding from the gunshot wound to his head. Nunes said he became scared and, with the help of a friend, he threw Jules’ body in a drain in Lopinot.

He said he reported the incident at the La Horquetta Police Station on May 12, 2003.

Attorney Dawn Mohan appeared with Scotland for Regis.
