Ambassador’s mother dies
Chandroutie was featured in Newsday’s People Magazine for Mother’s Day, 2004.
Originally from Aranjuez Main Road, Aranjuez, Chandroutie was also instrumental in inspiring her nine grandsons to train to become pundits and to lead religious lives. She was considered the “mother” of the Aranjuez area. Her eldest grandson, Umadutt Maharaj, took over the leadership of the Ram Dhaam Mandir in Diego Martin after Pundit Manideo Persad was appointed as TT’s Ambassador to India.
Umadutt said his grandmother was ailing since March at the Escort Heart Institute in New Delhi, India. Following heart surgery, Chandroutie, who was fondly called “Mama,” did not recover. The Persad family is now making plans to bring the body back to TT for cremation on June 11 at 10 am in Aranjuez.
