Good music at Jazz night
First up was Jah Jah Onilu who provided the audience with a special treat with his brand of music and they showed great appreciation.
Up next was Clifford Charles and Friends who included bassist Michael Nysus and Sharon Gennivieve Phillips, lead vocalist of the band Flame from Tobago.
The smooth style of guitarist Clifford Charles had the handful of patrons in awe. His ability to take you to the edge of your chair and bring you back comfortable without falling off is unique.
Just as you felt that Charles and friends were at the peak of their performance came Phillips. This young singer from Tobago performed ‘Summertime’ to great applause from the audience.
Referring to her love of jazz music Phillips said it is a myth that young people do not appreciate the finer things in life as she is living proof of that.
Her second song ‘Ain’t No Sunshine’ had the audience singing along throughout her performance.
The next act was Ken Professor Philmore who was a late stand in for Dane Gulston. Philmore kicked off his set with the Luther Vandross ‘Never Too Much’ and continued with Zan and Patrice Robert’s ‘Have You ever been In Love’ a very different and spirited version.
By this time the audience had improved significantly and Philmore and his friends were enjoying the music as much as the audience.
He continued with the theme from Mission Impossible mixed with ‘Ain’t No Woman Like The One I Got.’ Philmore also included the title song ‘Graduation’ for his ten-year-old CD as well as ‘Ordinary People.’
The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service Band continued the great night of music with their big band sound with songs like ‘New York, New York,’ ‘A Wonderful Day Like Today,’ “Cha Cha Chick,” ‘Mambo Beat’ and a special version of ‘Misty’ featuring Pedro Lezama on Baritone Saxophone.
The TTPS Band also featured Earl Bernard a trumpeter from Canada and Malcolm Boyce who sang two songs ‘Amen’ and ‘I feel Good’ that had the audience off their chairs.
