Mayaro man murdered one month after uncle

According to reports, Jason Morrain, of Bristol Village, went to purchase a gun from a man but instead was shot in his head and robbed of the $4,000 in cash he planned to use to buy the firearm. Police say arrests are imminent. They are searching for two men, a Mayaro fisherman and a Belmont man, in connection with the killing.

Shortly after 4 pm on Friday, residents of Edward Trace, near Peter Hill Street, Mayaro, called the police after gunshots rang out at the end of the street near a river bank. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Morrain’s body lying on the roadway. There were two bullet wounds to the head and police said they found $1,800 in the victim’s pants pockets.

Morrain’s uncle Peter, 47, a CPEP contractor, was gunned down on May 4. He was due to appear in court for shooting a man in the village. Police are still searching for suspects in that killing.

Relatives told investigators that Jason Morrain was watching a World Cup football game on television when he received a call on his cell phone. Minutes later, the relative said, Morrain was picked up by three men in a car.

Police suspect that Morrain went to the bank of the Ortoire river to purchase a firearm. They said that they believe Morrain was met by a man in a boat and during the negotiation for the gun the suspect shot Morrain in his head and robbed him of his money. The suspect, investigators said, then sped off in the boat up the river and escaped. District medical officer Dr Lionel Clare examined the body and ordered it removed to the Forensic Science Centre for an autopsy tomorrow.

PC Kistow of the Homicide (Eastern Division) is continuing investigations.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, South Division police are searching for suspects in the death of Kenneth “Jack” Goberdhansingh, who was found strangled Friday morning.

Goberdhansingh, of 444 Southern Main Road, Chase Village, was found dead near a Ministry of Education building. Police initially thought he was the victim of a “hit and run” accident but an autopsy later revealed that he died of manual strangulation.
