Police, Army patrols for San Juan
The Association’s President Gail Merhair told Newsday yesterday that patrols were common place in the area but ceased for no apparent reason earlier this year.
The call for the reintroduction of the patrols came on May 26 at a candlelight vigil held to protest the murder of businessman Gerard Mazely which occurred one week before on May 19 in the vicinity of the San Juan branch of Republic Bank. An official letter requesting the returned presence of the patrol was subsequently sent to the ministry.
Merhair expressed hopes that the strong visibility of the patrols would act as a deterrent to would-be perpetrators of crime so that “San Juan can return to an acceptable level of normalcy vis-?-vis crime.”
