Warriors fans scamper in Frankfurt
TRINIDAD and Tobago football fans were made to scamper for safety yesterday when police and security officers reponded to a bomb scare in downtown Frankfurt.
The Soca Warriors supporters had converged on the shopping district looking for bargains in this part of the city dominated by Germany’s immigrant population.
It was just hours after the Caribbean team had put up another brave performance against World Cup favourites England before going down 2-0 in their Group ‘B’ encounter in Nuremberg.
The entire area was cordoned off yesterday when a suspicious red piece of luggage was seen unattended close to a park.
Immediately the shoppers, including many Trinidadians readily identified by their Soca Warriors jerseys and headbands, were steered clear away from the possible trouble spot. Among those who witnessed the drama in the mid-afternoon were RBTT banker Mary Sui Butt and her daughter Stacy, a Trinidad and Tobago hockey star.
“It was really exciting. We all expected this suitcase to explode right there on the street,” said Stacy. However the Germans who have impressed all with their handling of security for the World Cup Finals defused the situation with their customary efficiency.
Then the area was once again opened up for the Soca Warriors and Frankfurt residents to go about their business.
