Warriors player grabs UK headlines
SOCA Warriors defender Brent Sancho made headlines in the UK on Thursday over his unusual proposal to 24-year-old girlfriend Jana Herbert-Fiu.
The proposal was made via a text message prior to TT’s game against England and was done by a BBC news anchor. The BBC News and Mirror both carried the story on the Internet.
The BBC story headlined “World Cup Player proposes by text” reported that 29-year-old Sancho, a defender for Gillingham (in the English Second Division), sent a text message to the BBC South East Today’s Geoff Clark three hours before kick off. The text said, “can you tell her Brent says he loves her more than anything else and would like to spend the rest of his life with her. Will she marry me?”
The BBC story said Herbert-Fiu played a strong defence and promised to text her reply to the BBC when Brent returned. The report said Herbert-Fiu ran a nightclub in PoS and wanted to see Sancho propose on bended knee.
The Mirror story was headlined “TT’s Sancho gets news reader to propose for him”. It said Sancho asked his local TV news reader to propose to his girlfriend live on air on Thursday night during the TT team’s defeat against England.
The Mirror said Herbert-Fiu was stunned by the message which she got in the 80th minute of the match during an interview with Clark. She reportedly said, “I’ll wait for him to come home.”
The story said three minutes later, Sancho allowed Peter Crouch to nod home England’s first goal.
Sancho’s parents are both in Germany for the Soca Warrior matches. His father Keith Sancho, is the Public Relations Officer for the Health Ministry.
