SOUTH FANS IN AGONY

When the game was over and done with, south fans were in tears, but this did not overcome the pride they felt to have qualified in football world cup. Whistles, cheers and finally a hushed silence were the reactions by Soca Warriors fans in South Trinidad yesterday following our defeat at the hands of Paraguay.

The game which was played in Kaiserslautern, Germany, had local fans glued in front every available television screen in pubs, fast food restaurants and shopping malls.

Red was the colour of choice for most while the national flag was hoisted proudly in front of homes, cars and business places.

All along High Street, San Fernando, pedestrians and shoppers alike were decked off in red “Soca Warriors” T-shirts, wristbands and bandanas. At the Gulf City Shopping Complex, scores of avid fans crowded around two flat-screen televisions to cheer on the nation team.

However, when the final whistle blew signifying the loss to Paraguay, the mood was sombre. Fans also lined the front of six televison sets inside the Radio Shack outlet, chatting excitedly whenever TT led a breakaway counter-attack or fell silent whenever the Paraguay team marched toward the goal. The streets of San Fernando were deserted by noon yesterday, with hardly any traffic as most people remained indoors to view the match.
