Police shot and killed a 22-year-old man of Bagatelle, who they claim was wanted for four murders and a series of firearm offences.

Reports revealed that at about 5 pm on Wednesday, officers of the Western Division went to Savnannah Terrace, Bagatelle, to execute a warrant on Sherwin Daniel.

The officers claimed that on arrival at the house they were greeted by gunfire and they returned fire. Daniel was shot several times.

Police recovered a revolver, five spent rounds and one live round at the scene of the shootout. Two 14-year-old boys and a 17-year-old woman who were in company with Daniel fled the scene and escaped.

Police investigators told Newsday that Daniel rented guns and was a “hitman.”

They added that he was wanted for four murders in the Carenage and Diego Martin areas.

When Newsday visited the scene of the shooting death, neighbours of the dead man disputed the claims by the police that Daniel shot at them and they returned fire.

Eyewitnesses claimed that Daniel was shot dead in cold blood by a group of police officers. They also claimed that Daniel eked out a living as a mason and was not involved in any illicit activities.

Investigations are continuing.
