Newsday salutes the Warriors

On Tuesday, June 20, 2006, the day TT Soca Warriors were due to play Paraguay, in that crucial match that might have taken them to round two of the World Cup, Newsday wrote a letter to the team which appeared in place of our daily Editorial. In essence our newspaper saluted the team for awakening a spirit of national pride never seen before. You have done us proud, we wrote the Warriors.

On Saturday last that Editorial Letter engraved on brass mounted on wood was presented to each member of the team by Sean Douglas, senior political reporter, who penned the letter that so clearly expressed not only Newsday’s sentiments but that of all the people of Trinidad and Tobago who gave unconditional support and love to our team.

The photograph on this page and on pages 16 and 20 (also visable online) show the Warriors displaying the Newsday plaques which we hope will forever remind them of our joy at their sterling performance at World Cup 2006. History was made when they were the first TT football team to play on the world stage flying the colours of the smallest nation ever to play in a World Cup. Well done, our Warriors!
