Leader holds pow-wow with lawyer

Hours before the executive met and passed a no-confidence motion against Dookeran, the St Augustine MP took from in front and sought legal advice from Ramichand.

However, Dookeran’s communications attache Nirad Tewarie yesterday sought to play down any notion of a legal battle, saying many people have been visiting Dookeran expressing their concerns and offering advice on the current power struggle within the party.

“Most of this advice is unsolicited and some of the persons are attorneys,” Tewarie said matter-of-factly.

Reports from the Dookeran camp indicated yesterday that moves against Dookeran were imminent. The executive has repeatedly criticised the political leader for allegedly acting without approval from its members. Several top members have openly taunted Dookeran saying he should leave and form his own party, while others have been calling for disciplinary action. The executive has written to Dookeran expressing concerns about the manner in which he has been operating. Sources said the executive has acted in an unconstitutional manner.
