Like Trinidad, the top positions were also shared by a boy and a girl. Toni Murray-Lovell topped the list with 243 points while Akili Fraser followed with 239 points. Raynelle Joseph of Mason Hall Government Primary School followed with 238 points.

Murray-Lovell received 99 percent in mathematics and 90 percent in Language Arts while Fraser got 98 percent and 82 percent in mathematics and Language Arts respectively. All three students passed for Bishop’s High School. An overjoyed Murray-Lovell said beating 887 other students had not been accomplished by guess but by design. “I am elated that I was named number one. When I first heard the news, I was a bit surprised but I had actually set out to win and just like the motto of our school says: ‘Hard work has its reward.’ My hard work has actually paid off,” said the 11-year-old.

A supervisor at the THA Education Division said while the Ministry of Education had announced that Murray-Lovell and the others were among the country’s top 200 SEA placings, he was confident she had made the top 100.

He said there was an improvement in the overall results this year with only 77 students needing remedial classes.

He noted that only three boys had made it into the top 15 and urged boys to step up their game. The supervisor advised parents to continue to help and monitor their children’s performances.
