Junior golfers off to Puerto Rico

Six countries— The Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, OECS, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago and the US Virgin Islands will bid for honours at the Westin Rio Mar Beach Golf Resort and Spa in the town of Rio Grande.

This year Trinidad and Tobago are fielding a strong team of 14 accomplished and committed Junior Golfers who have spent many rigorous weeks training for the event.

And for the first time the team will include two junior golfers from Tobago.

The team will include the 2006 Republic Bank Junior Open Champion (Girls Category), Tracey Clarke, who has represented the Junior National team for the past six years.

Clarke also won the 2006 St Andrew’s Golf Club Championship and the Digicel Open. She will be competing in the Girl’s 18 and Under category.

Also representing the twin isles will be the male champion of the 2006 Republic Bank Junior Golf Open, Kerville Cowie. Hailing form the sister isle in Tobago, Kerville has played golf for six years and has captured many junior titles. He will be competing in the Boy’s 18 and Under category.

Trinidad and Tobago are the defending champions having won the Hank James Trophy (awarded to the overall winner) in both 2004 and 2005 and many Trinidad and Tobago players have placed in the top three spots in their individual division.

Republic Bank sponsors these youngsters as part of their Power to Make a Difference commitment to youth sport development. The bank stated in a media release that they are extremely proud of the team and wish them all the best in the upcoming competition.
