Debe market a disgrace

On Thursday June 22, I was appalled, saddened and even angered to see cafeteria operators operating in the most inhumane conditions. These operators were conducting business in a furnace. Ventilation was poor.

Soft drinks stored in containers with ice.

These operators were constantly moving from the kitchen to the cold water in these containers.

On enquiry, I was told that management deliberately disconnected the electricity and the supply will return, only when the operators disconnect their freezers, as the circuit is obsolete and overloaded.

Can the management of the market replace the obsolete breaker and in the process satisfy all stakeholders, or is it more prudent to sacrifice poor hardworking citizens?

Through your column, I hope the Minister of Agriculture, Minister of Health and the Public Health Authorities are alerted to this disgrace and take the necessary action to rescue these operators, lest they become casualties of the state. I vow never to return to the Debe Wholesale Market again.
