Cyclist impresses in US

Mc Lean placed fourth in the Keirin Final, a race involving a number of top international cyclists such as Roberto Chiappa of Italy and the USA’s Tim Veldt and Teun Mulder.

The race was won by Veldt while Teun Mulder was second and Chiappa, third.

It brought the curtains down on the event after a series of other races including a one-mile prime, an elite Men’s Elimination race, a two-kilometre Scratch heat and an eight-kilometre Scratch race.

Mc Lean also finished third in the Match Sprint in only his first year riding in the Senior Division at the National Championship held earlier.

But in the Keirin Finals at the USA versus the World event, Mc Lean was basically out of the picture during the course of the race until the last 600 metres.

The mass of riders surged ahead with Veldt, Mulder and Andy Lakatosh all in the lead bunch.

However it was the Italian Chiappa, the 2005 World Keirin Champion who took a slim lead ahead of the pack.

Mc Lean meanwhile was barely visible inside the bunch but had been making progress.

At the finish Veldt surged ahead by half of a bike for the top position while Mulder also overtook Chiappa for the runner-up spot.

Mc Lean finished fourth while Kevin Selker claimed the fifth place.

The Trinidad and Tobago rider who has made a name for himself on the local circuit had only earlier beaten Mulder and Lakatosh in the semi-final, to advance to the final.

Veldt meanwhile had also come out on top in his semi-final race to secure a berth in the final.

Also competing in the event was Selker, Chiappa and another top rider, Eric Beausejour.
