Archers top south Caribbean

The TT squad earned a whopping 52 medals in the three-day tournament, including 16 gold, 28 silver and eight bronze.

The hosts followed with 33 (nine gold, six silver and 18 bronze) and next were Martinique with 12 (11 gold and one silver) and French Guiana, five, (one silver and four bronze).

The first day of action featured events at four different distances per class with participants’ scores tallied to obtain their FITA (the world’s governing body for the sport) total which was then used to rank the archers.

On the second day, based on their rank, the archers entered the Olympic Round which is an elimination match format.

The Olympic Round followed a knock-out format based on 12-arrow matches with Trinidad and Tobago won the championships in three out of six categories.

The Recurve Bow Male category progressed to the semi-finals with one archer from Barbados and one from Trinidad and Tobago in each match.

Both locals won, which led to an all-Trinidad gold medal match.

In the end, Jonathan Kacal took top honours over Anthony Banfield after a close match 88-85, with Shane De Freitas of Barbados taking the bronze.

In the Compound Bow Male category, Selwyn Jagesar ended his semi-final match with the same score as his opponent— 101.

This forced a one-arrow tie-break which was won by Alain Robinson of French Guiana by a single point.

Jagesar went on to win the bronze-medal match with Fabien Poyou defeating Robinson for the gold.

In the Recurve Bow Female category, Angela Jones of Barbados shot to gold with Judith Magras (Barbados) and Patricia Price (TT) taking silver and bronze respectively.

In the Compound Bow Female category, TT’s Sarah Jagesar out-shot compatriot Noella Chin 93-78.

The Yoemen categories were equally exciting with Trinidad well-represented as Terry Mohammed took silver in the Recurve category and Marc Ramlal and Radesh Lalchan gold and silver apiece in the Compound Bow.
