Father of 14 gunned down outside home

A 51-year-old father of 14 was gunned down outside his Chin Chin Road, Cunupia home on Tuesday night but while relatives are claiming that he bothered no one, the police say he had matters before the court for kidnapping and robberies.

Police reports revealed that at about 10.40 pm, Bill Canning was standing outside his home at Kerningham Trace, Cunupia, when he was confronted by a man who shot him three times.

His wife Tina who heard the gunshots ran to the front of the house where she saw the body of her husband lying in the driveway.

The frantic woman alerted relatives who contacted the Cunupia police and a party of homicide officers went to the scene along with a district medical officer.

The body was viewed and ordered removed to the Forensic Science Centre.

Yesterday, relatives of the dead man told Newsday that he was a supervisor at the Unemployment Relief Pro-gramme.

They added that he was a Muslim and bothered no one.

This was disputed by police officers who said that Canning had matters pending in court for robberies and kidnapping and that he was also well known to the police.

Records from the Homicide Bureau have revealed that 207 people have been murdered for the year. Investigations are continuing.
