Cops not dismissing foul play in scaffolding collapse

Floyd Simmonds, one of the victims who lost his left leg as a result of injuries sustained in the fall from the scaffolding at the Wrightson Road project on Wednesday, said that he was visited by officials of Movalite Limited and assured that he will be compensated for his injuries.

He will receive his full salary from Movalite, the company where he was employed for a mere three weeks.

Simmonds of Bath Street, East Dry River, said that doctors checked his blood count yesterday and told him that his right leg seems to be healing.

On Wednesday, Simmonds, a father of one underwent emergency surgery at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital and his left leg was amputated.

Another injured employee Hayden Peters is expected to undergo surgery soon. His relatives have been told to secure blood from blood donors to facilitate the surgery on his left leg.

Police officers investigating the scaffolding crash are expected to submit a report to the Senior Supt in charge of the Port-of-Spain Division next week.

Lead investigator Insp Joanne James interviewed several eyewitnesses to the crash as well as the victims, and the persons responsible for erecting the scaffolding.

Police officers told Sunday Newsday that they are not ruling out sabotage in the scaffolding crash probe.

They are calling on anyone with key information to contact them in the interest of justice.
