Alexander grabs second gold

ANNIE ALEXANDER claimed her second gold medal in the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Junior Championships at the newly refurbished Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo yesterday when she won the Girls Under-20 Shot Put.

Alexander, the record holder with a distance of 15.91 metres, dipped just under that yesterday when she threw 14.91 metres, well ahead of second place Tracey Morrison of The Bahamas.

On Friday Alexander won the discus throw for the Girls Under-20s in a new record of 45.62 metres.

And yesterday she proved it was no fluke when she disposed her opponents in the shot put. Morrison’s got the silver with a 13.02-metre heave and Pensamiento Pau Flores of Mexico grabbed third place with a throw of 12.22 metres.

However the performance of the day came from Trinidad and Tobago’s Renny Quow who held on in the finals of the Boys Under-20 400-metres sprint for the gold medal. And in the process Quow successfully defended his CAC Games record.

Quow brought the enthusiastic crowd to their feet, when running in lane four he was challenged stride for stride by determined Jamaican Allodin Fothergill. But Quow outlasted Fothergill to post a time of 46.14 seconds while Fothergill finished in 46.17 seconds.

Another Jamaican Edino Steele was third in 46.29 seconds for the bronze. Trinidad and Tobago were holding their own on the second day of competition, but the Jamaicans were making their mark in almost every event.

In the Girls Under-20 400 metres sprint Trinidad and Tobago’s Janeil Bellille earned bronze finishing in 56.15 seconds. Jamaica claimed the top two spots. Sonita Sutherland won the race in 51.57, while her compatriot Bobby Gaye Wilkins was second in 53.19.

Jessica James also secured bronze in the one-lap sprint for TT in the Girls Under-17 event returning a time of 56.60 seconds.

The race was won by Jamaica’s Latoya Mc Dermot in 54.10 while St Lucia’s Monica Moncherry earned the silver in 55.15 seconds.

In the Boys Under-20 Javelin event, TT’s Jeffrey Williams earned silver with a throw of 57.86 metres.

Mexico’s Blasco Mendes claimed the gold medal with a throw of 62.09 metres and Omar Jones of Barbados was third with a 56.19-metres effort.
