MAGISTRATE PUTS ASSAULTED CHILD IN home

When Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington heard that the child was still hospitalised, he instructed the police prosecutor in the First Police Court to ensure that the victim be placed in a home after she is discharged from the medical institution.

Yesterday, when the matter came up for hearing, the accused father renewed his application for bail before Magistrate Wellington. According to the charge laid by the police, the offence of grievous sexual assault was allegedly committed between January 1 and June 1, 2006, on the girl. The charge was laid indictably by WPC Lydia Persad.

The accused father first appeared before the court last month, for the offence.

Yesterday, police prosecutor Sgt Joey Samaroo, told the court that the accused had no previous convictions or pending matters on record. Samaroo added, however, that the alleged victim in the case was still warded at hospital.

Wellington granted the father $100,000 bail to be approved by the Clerk of the Peace.

Wellington ordered, “If she gets out of hospital, make sure she gets into a home.”

The matter was postponed to July 28.`
