Early Hindu recordings

SM Akberali recorded eight Muslin chants, two of which were rejected, but the others were actually put on discs. These were done in 1941. In 1940 and 41 both Decca and Victor recorded singers such as Mangal Anand, Beujalal, Chaitoo, Tuli Dass, etc. A further 24 singers were also recorded. Accompanying the singers were the following orchestras: RS Naraynsingh, Jit Seesahai, B Gopi and Nazir Mohammed.

Even though the information is available, the availability of the records is another matter. It is quite possible that the Smithsonian Institute may have some, if not all of them. There may even be available right here in someone’s home unaware of their historical importance and value.
