Golfers set for Stephen Ames Cup

TT’s Shane Castelloe and Timothy Martin were on the greens at the ninth hole rehearsing their shots for what is expected to be a tough competition.

The Canadians led by Zac Bested also tarried in yesterday’s sweltering sun in preparation for the showdown.

Tomorrow he will have the support of compatriots David Downs, Scott Lowe and Sean Jedrusiak.

They will all contest the Under-21 division of the Stephen Ames Cup organised by the foundation named after the Canada-based golf star. The Canadian girls also tried yesterday to acclimatise to the heat having recently arrived here in the twin-island republic.

Claudine Foong and Leslie Booth practised on the 17th hole as their Trinidad and Tobago’s counterparts Diana Torry and Tracey Clarke looked on.

Both Clarke and Torry are confident of doing well in the tournament. The last time it was held in Canada, the home team won the event but the locals are hoping to turn things around this week

The competition will be contested in the following categories — Under-21 Division, Under-18 for boys and girls; as well as the Under-15 division which will be open for boys only.

The tournament initially was expected to be for juniors but organisers have decided to bridge the gap between junior golf and seniors by including the Under-21 division.

The tournament will be played in a Match-Play format and matches will consist of Better Ball which include Foursome, Alternate Shot, and Singles.

Ames was expected home yesterday following his 42nd finish in the British Open competition which American Tiger Woods won. Ames will share his experience with the players of both teams at a clinic which follows the official launch of the tournament today.
