However, fixed line customers will be entitled to two free calls per month to directory enquiries. In addition, the company said all fixed line customers who are visually impaired will be exempted from the new charge to directory enquiries.

TSTT officials indicated yesterday the changes were in keeping with the new legal and regulatory framework governing the local telecommunications sector.

The officials explained that the changes were not because TSTT did not wish to offer free services to the public but because the new regulations prevented the company from undertaking a certain amount of cross subsidising. They added that these changes were in keeping with the concessions given to TSTT by the Telecom Authority and were similar to changes in other liberalised telecom markets in the region.

TSTT also indicated in its statement that it will continue to have telephone directories available annually to all of its customers free of charge.
