Speaker’s nephew killed in crash

Dead is Matthew Sinanan, 26, of Norman Tang Street, Vistabella, San Fernando, whose car crashed into a light pole along the Solomon Hochoy Highway.

Sinanan was the son of Indira and Dr Joel Sinanan. The victim’s father, Joel, is the brother of the Speaker of the House, Barry Sinanan. Joel is also a former vice chairman of the South West Regional Health Authority.

According to a police report, Sinanan was proceeding north on the highway near Mid-Centre Mall Chaguanas at 11.45 pm, when he lost control of his blue Mitsubishi Lancer.

Police said the car flipped over several times before slamming into a light pole.

The report stated that Sinanan, who was the only occupant in the vehicle, died at the scene.

The District Medical Officer visited the scene and ordered the body removed to the Port-of-Spain mortuary for an autopsy, which is carded for today.

Scores of Sinanan’s friends and family members yesterday visited the deceased’s residence where they paid their respects. House Speaker, Barry Sinanan, was among the visitors.

The victim’s mother, Indira, had requested that no comment be given concerning the incident. Chaguanas Police Station officers yesterday told Newsday an inspector had instructed them not to divulge information to the media about the circumstances surrounding Sinanan’s death. PC Daniel Deoraj of the Chaguanas Police Station is investigating.
