CID probing fisherman’s killing

Mohammed spent a week at the Intensive Care Unit at the Port-of-Spain General Hospital fighting for his life, but succumbed to his injuries on Friday, after he was shot by a Coast Guard officer.

The Coast Guard said it plans to complete its own investigation by next week, and National Security Minister Martin Joseph reportedly said on Friday that two investigations were being conducted by Police Commissioner Trevor Paul.

Angry residents of the Charlieville community gathered at the Uriah Butler Highway last week to protest the shooting. Mohammed’s wife, Nalini, maintained her husband’s innocence to the very end, saying he was not involved in illegal activity on the night of the shooting.

Mohammed was the father of 13-month-old Selena.

Eyewitnesses claimed Moham-med and others were fishing when an unmarked boat approached them.

The fishermen thought the men were pirates and broke anchor in an attempt to get out of the area. The men then pulled up behind the fishing boat and tried to switch off the engine. When Mohammed intervened, he was shot in the head and shoulders at point blank range.

The shooter identified himself as a Coast Guard officer.
