Sport could be TT’s saviour

SPORTT chairman Gerard Ferreira told an audience at the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board’s 50th awards function held at Roof Top Hall, Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope.

He pointed out sport could be our saviour and it can unite the people of a country, and gave as a typical example the recent advent of the Soca Warriors football team at the recent World Cup in Germany, when every creed and race, UNC and PNM came together to give support.

Ferreira said he sees sport as the tool and mechanism to prevent crime in Trinidad and Tobago and if he has the political will TT will be fully developed in sport by the year 2012.

He said the amount of talent TT has is unbelievable and as SPORTT chairman he is going to make every effort to have these talents developed and marketed and have our flag flying high throughout the world.

In addition he said, sports will be carried to every part of Trinidad and Tobago, ensuring that it is on everyone’s mind.

According to Ferreira, infrastructures will be built in every region to facilitate the various disciplines in sports.

Coaches, umpires, referees, scorers, players, managers and administrators will receive the necessary training to their fullest potential so as to achieve success.

Ferreira said he wants to see West Indies cricket return to its rightful place at the top and expressed the hope that half of the team would consist of Trinidad and Tobago players.

In the area of cricket, Ferreira said, his company already had in place 11 turf wickets and had developed 13 regional grounds.
