One grave for twin sisters

The funeral service was disrupted when the twins’ angry mother Jeanine Campbell Washington who was clearly in deep grief shouted at the media and at one stage turned a water hose on reporters and cameramen. The equipment of a cameraman was damaged during the incident. The twins were laid to rest a week after they drowned in a bathtub at the Valencia home of a female relative who at the time, left the nine-month-old twins in the care of a six-year-old child.

The twins lay next to each other in the small coffin and both were dressed in pink dresses. Washington was seen staring blankly at the coffin during the service.

In a brief eulogy, Washington said when she learnt she was pregnant, she thought she would be giving birth to a boy. “During the delivery, doctors told me I was going to give birth to twin girls. I was filled with so much joy,” Washington said. She added that she would miss her daughters and longed to hold them again.

Pastor Peter Regis who officiated at the service called on the public to desist from casting judgment on the twins’ female relative who left them in the care of a six-year-old child.

Regis said the incident could have “happened to anyone” especially in unguarded moments. He urged mourners to pray for the family and the soulds of the twins.

Meanwhile, police investigating the incident, said charges are likely to be laid against two persons this week. Cpl Christopher Fuentes is investigating.
