No win situation in TT politics

There is a sense of despair going through Trinidad and Tobago the likes of which we have never experienced. All the more bizarre and incomprehensible when one considers the titanic amount of money this country has at its disposal. Our GNP has, with oil skyrocketing to unheard of levels, surpassed the GNP of several Caribbean countries combined. Yet we seem poised on the brink of anarchy and chaos. How did this happen?

On the one hand, we have a demagogue who, in his dying political days, has refused to do what is right. Instead, he is content to destroy everything around him before he lets go of power. Just like those old bulls the cowboys had to put to sleep because they kept attacking everything in sight as they fell deeper into dementia as old age caught up to them.

Then we have his counterpart in the PNM. His inability to control the situation is made even more terrifying by his propensity to surround himself with incompetents whose only purpose is to say yes and prop his ego.

The sad thing is that were a new party to emerge at this point they would still not have a chance of winning or helping the country simply because our electorate still vote race and party, not intelligence. We can write as many letters as we want, or block every street from Port-of-Spain to Point; or protest in front of the Red House all we wish to. At the end of the day, unless the people make a difference there never can be a difference. Winston Churchill once said: “The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.” Is that a perfect picture of TT?

Until we realise that we are responsible for our own woes, we can’t fix the problem. Remember, if you put an arsonist to bake a cake, don’t cry when you end up with the taste of ashes in your mouth. After all you gave him the matches.
