Seven-race Carib ‘Friday Lime’ at Santa Rosa Park

All the races tomorrow have been named after one of the power boats, with the feature Restricted Handicap over 1100 metres on the turf course taking the name of perennial champion Mr Solo II.

Before the start of the day’s horseracing, 24 boats listed to face the starter in the annual Carib Great on August 26 will be on show at Santa Rosa Park, and turfites will get an opportunity to get aboard and have a feel of the sleek power boats.

At a news conference at the Carib Brewery Hospitality Suite yesterday, new Trinidad and Tobago Power Boats Association president Jean Stampfli said this year’s entry is the most in many years.

And he accorded this to the introduction of staggered starts last year, and the disbursement of the $100,000 at stake to the winners of the various categories, apart from the overall winner.

Stampfli said the staggered starting also makes for a better finish at Store Bay, in sister island Tobago as fans will not have to wait for long periods between boats approaching the finishing point.

He said, “It is time to make this race an international event, but we need help.”

Stampfli said, however, it is his intention to attract foreign competition from next year.

ARC president Gerard Ferreira said he always looked forward to the Carib “Friday Lime,” since it generates better returns than possibly a Saturday racing day.
