‘Ramayan Ballet’ goes to Debe

It starts tonight and will continue until Sunday beginning 7 pm nightly. Fifty local actors have been working alongside five of India’s top religious performers for the dance/drama.

Among the performers from India, Vijesh Bhoorana will play the role of Lord Rama and Miss India TnT Anushka Dube will play Sita. The two have been receiving loud applause for their effort in bringing to life the characters from the ancient epic of the “Ramayan.”

The play starts with the coronation ceremony of the demon king Ravana. Then the demon pledges to maintain his superiority over mankind, and summons his disciples to destroy the holy settlements and establishments.

It continues when Lord Vishnu appears to his devotees, assuring them that he will be born as Lord Rama in the Kingdom of Dasharat to help them.

The production was brought to TT as part of the trade exposition “Festivals of India,” which is promoted by Indian businessman Amit Alag.

“Ramayan Ballet” sketches the story of Shri Ramachandra, the incarnation of God, who walked on earth as a mere mortal defeating the mightiest power with an army of apes.

According to Goswami, the Ramayan holds the answers to all the miseries of life. He called on the general public to attend the showing to see for themselves the wonder that is the Ramayan.

Local lead actors include Martin Sahadath in the role of Lakshman, Shiva Sookraj as Bharat, Mukesh Rajalal as Kumbakaran, Zalisa Boodoosingh as Sunaina and Subrina Bissessarsingh as Mandodarie. Teenagers Lisa Samlal and Ackeem Mohammed have both taken on multiple roles in this production.

The other actors from India include Kishore Salonki as Ravan, Malima Salonki, Ashaa Bhati and Sanjeev Boranie. Members of the Brahma Gyaan Ramleela Group of Esmaralda have also joined in to perform in the production.
