Scotiabank ATM robbed...again

The bandits are believed to have entered through the roof of the bank and up to late yesterday, bank officials were unable to say exactly how much money was stolen.

According to police reports, between 4 am and 5 am, two men went to the Cunupia branch of Scotiabank and entered the building via the roof.

Once inside, the men cut the alarm wires and using the blowtorch, cut their way into the ATM where several money bins were removed. Cunupia got a tip off from a member of the public who went to withdraw money from the ATM and discovered that the machine had been tampered with.

Officers led by Supt Barnette Mayers and members of the Crime Scene Unit went to the scene and carried out investigations. The area around the ATM was “dusted” by investigators for fingerprints. The bank was closed for business yesterday with three guards on duty outside the building.

On May 20, bandits used a blowtorch to rob an ATM machine located inside MS Food City Supermarket. $300,000 was taken from this ATM.

On June 4, bandits struck at the Pembroke Street ATM machine of Scotiabank and set that ATM on fire. No money was stolen.

On July 7, bandits broke into the El Socorro branch of Scotiabank and removed cash from that branch’s ATM.

Scotiabank assistant General Manager Gilbert Sankar said yesterday that the bank will be reviewing security arrangements in the wake of these robberies. Investigations are continuing.
