Rev Weekes celebrates 30 years as minister

It all started in 1966 when as a student of Unity Port-of Spain she was asked to conduct a Lenten series entitled “Keeping a true Lent.”

Fifteen members of the “Unity School” registered for the classes which she kept at her home.

Ten years later she was still hosting the classes which had grown to 39.

In 1976, when Weekes was about to apply for her teacher’s licence from the Unity School of Kansas, a friend persuaded her to instead apply to the Universal Foundation for Better Living (UFBL), an association of independent member churches and study group committed to the teaching and spreading of new thought (Metaphysical Christianity) founded by Johnnie Coleman. She interviewed for the position and was granted her ministerial licence.

On August 4, 1976, Weekes was ordained a minister by Coleman.

With Coleman’s assistance she and members of the Christ Circle for Better Living soon built a church at La Puerta Avenue, Diego Martin. The foundation stone of the church was laid on March 9, 1980.

Weekes realised that she could not run a church alone and so she started training teachers.

The first group of teachers was granted their licence on the September 14, 1986.

She later initiated a choir, a Board of Directors and a maintenance team. There are also youth group and Sunday School activities.
