Horizon edge Army b-ballers 57-56
ROYAL EXTRA North Zone Basketball queens Horizon narrowly beat Defence Force 57-56 as action in the Women’s Division got underway at the St Paul’s Street Multi-Purpose Facility in Port-of-Spain.
The teams battled to a 12-12 first quarter of Monday’s match, but Horizon stormed into a 10-point lead 30-20 at the half. The Army-Coast Guard girls put on their battle-dress in the third stanza, and outscored their rivals 25-8 to take a 45-38 lead at the end. Then a tremendous battle ensued throughout the final period, with Horizon tightenening their defence to subdue the rampant Defence Force to 11 points while scoring 19 to snatch victory. Philomena George led all scorers with 19 points, while Rachael Thompson added 14. Crystal George had 13 points for Defence Force, while Sojourner “Suzy” Hyles, Stacy Wilson and Alicia Liverpool added 10 points each.
Defence Force men had little trouble in overcoming Royal Extra Lions 77-62 in their Premier Division match also on Monday. Vincent Wilt led the Army-Coast Guard men with 19 points, while Steven Lewis had 16, Mervyn “Unks” Jackson, 14, and Kervis King, 10. Ronald Hernandez scored 14 points and David Burton matched him with 14 of his own including four three-pointers, while Anthony Noreiga got 12 for the Lions.
