Joefield, TT’s representative in the Fourth Open World Tournament and seventh Dan Instructor, said that karate is not only used for discipline but it promotes awareness of the environment.
“People are advised to use self-discipline to promote a sense of your surroundings and it is your first means of disposal to prevent any situation,” he said.
Martial arts can be learnt by anyone but having discipline of the body and mind, makes a person better at life, he said. “In this day and age, training often suffers because of commitments to other things in life,” he pointed out, adding that any lack of dedication to training could lead to under achievement. He started training at the age of 13 and moved on to training in Japan and in New York, to better himself as a martial artist.
Joefield uses the technique of traditional Kishi Karate from Japan and represents the international organisation’s branch in Trinidad and Tobago.
He said that Kishi Karate is not used in the Olympics because it is a full contact sport, and no protection is used during competitions.
His dojo is located in the Croisee, San Juan where he teaches over 50 students in Kishi Karate, personal training and low impact aerobics.
