Water flows in Demerara

For the first time, they can enjoy a drink of water from a pipe-borne supply.

This was the boast of Minister of Public Utilities and Environment Pennelope Beckles who commissioned yesterday the WASA pipeline which is expected to supply the 186 households in the Arima village.

Beckles, the Arima MP, admitted the village has been neglected in the past. And although the community now has clean water, some needs still have to be met, like street lights and better roads. But things are much better today, she told the villagers.

Beckles said an estimated 482 persons will benefit from the pipeline project which cost $975,028. There were no cost overruns.

The project, in which 1,737 metres of 100mm PVC pipe were installed, took three months to complete.

Even so, WASA still has a long way to go in achieving a continuous water supply across the country.

She advised the villagers to not waste water nor pollute the rivers and streams as these actions made it more difficult for WASA to provide potable water.

Beckles complimented Harold Henry and his executive of the Demerara Village Council for their efforts and co-operation. She also commended councillor Carol Charles for her involvement in the project.

The areas which will be receiving water at Demerara Road are Peter Avenue, Silk Cotton Drive, Matura Road, 21 Jump Street, Paradise Lane and Thompson Avenue.
