Gunned down near mom’s home

Police sources said that before John Gueverra was gunned down, he told his close friend Quayne Rochford that he wanted to talk to his (Gueverra) mother Ingrid and would be paying her a visit.

According to police reports, at about 8 am, two men who were known to Gueverra, ambushed and shot him three times in the chest near his mother’s home. They then ran off shouting that they had nine more executions to carry out.

Rochford, on learning of the shooting, went to the scene and on seeing his friend’s body, started to cry. He told Newsday that members of a gang were responsible for the killing.

Another friend of Gueverra who was also at the scene accused the police of supplying this gang with guns and drugs.

Rochford said he believes the gang moved into the Samaroo Village area and was trying to recruit youths from the area to join the gang. He said that both he and Gueverra were doing their best to dissuade the youth’s from joining the gang and this was why Gueverra was shot.

He also called on the police to not only act quickly and arrest his friend’s killers but to also come into the area and hold counselling sessions with the youths in order to turn them away from a life of crime.

Gueverra’s friends admitted that the deceased was at one time involved in a gang but had changed his ways, got a job as a security guard and was living an honest life. They bemoaned the fact that someone who made such a change could not live to benefit from it.

Gueverra is the 246th murder victim for the year. Up to late yesterday no arrests had been made and investigations are continuing.
