Young Warriors beat Guyana

The Anton Corneal-coached squad will now face the best second-placed team, from the seven other groups, in Tuesday’s quarter-final round at the Dwight Yorke Stadium, Bacolet.

After ten minutes of play, Knox registered his seventh goal of the tournament in fantastic style, blowing past the Guyanese back-line with blistering pace on the right and powering his right-footer past goalkeeper Owen Williams’ near post.

Cyrus doubled TT’s lead in the 50th, when he collected a left-sided centre from Akeem Adams, avoided his marker Jaison Cobena and blasted his left-footer beyond Williams’ reach.

The match seemed to be meandering towards the inevitable result until stand-in captain O’Neil completed the scoring in stoppage time as he thundered a low 25-metre blast beyond the keeper’s right hand.

In the earlier match of the double-header, Francois Croes netted a 64th minute equaliser as Aruba battled to a 1-1 draw against Grenada, after Allan Munro gave the Grenadians a 43rd minute lead.

The final set of matches will take place today. Defending champions Canada seems certain to advance as winner of Group “A” when they meet the President’s XI from 7 pm at Bacolet, while Bermuda faces El Salvador two hours earlier.

In Group “B,” Panama and Puerto Rico will meet from noon, at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Marabella to determine the group-winners, two hours after St Lucia oppose Anguilla. Suriname and Barbados will battle for top spot in Group “C,” from 1 pm, at Brechin Castle in Couva, followed by the St Vincent-Netherlands Antilles contest.

With Haiti virtually assured of success in Group “D,” St Martin will face the Cayman Islands at Guaracara Park, Pointe-a-Pierre from 5 pm while, at the Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Jamaica can claim victory in Group “F” with a win against Dominica at noon, followed by the clash between Cuba and the Bahamas.

And, in Group “G,” Mexico and St Kitts/Nevis will fight for first place at the Larry Gomes Stadium, Arima from 6 pm, two hours after Antigua/Barbuda meet the United States Virgin Islands.
