“Although we have a very small but active unit of 16 officers in Trinidad and four in Tobago we make sure to enforce the laws rigorously,” she said.

She continued, “If a person is caught polluting the air with their vehicle emissions they are asked to pull their car over so that it could be towed away to prevent it from affecting the environment, the person is then fined $60.”

When asked what was the progress of the proposed Environmental Court, she said, “Right now there is the Environmental Commission but certain cases are heard at the Magistrates Court.”

Defective maintenance causes vehicles to produce a larger quantity of these contaminants, Charles said. These emissions not only endanger human health but also contribute to global warming and depletion of the ozone layer, Charles added.
