Close call in Blanchisseuse

The plea comes after Gibson’s experience while driving over a spring bridge in Blanchisseuse.

Gibson related her ordeal to Sunday Newsday.

“We were taking some Venezuelan guests to see the Asa Wright Nature Centre and to Blanchisseuse,” said Gibson.

“When we got to the spring bridge, some of the bridge’s wooden planks shifted and fell and the car was suspended between the river below and the bridge above.”

Gibson said that if it had not been for the assistance of some passers-by, she is certain that the car would have stayed in its precarious position.

“We have to thank God for the ten or so people who helped us,” said Gibson. She expressed her disappointment at how “poorly” the bridge was maintained.

“That bridge is not maintained and the Tourist Board wants to tell you to bring people to see Trinidad. The bridge is very dangerous and we are inviting tourists to come into the country and see your countryside,” Gibson lamented.

“If we want tourists, we have to do the work. We are dealing with the frills and not with the root cause of the problems. It’s about time we start doing proper maintenance of our roads and of our bridges that are a risk to people’s lives.”
