$100,000 for Salandy bout

This was revealed yesterday by Boxu Potts, co-ordinator of the World Boxing Association/World Boxing Council super welterweight contest on September 15 at Skinner Park, San Fernando.

Potts, Trinidad and Tobago’s premiere boxing showman said yesterday the good news was relayed by Minister of Sport and Youth Affairs Roger Boynes.

Minister Boynes was at the time praising the exploits of the Calypso Girls netballers who last weekend captured the AFNA Championships to qualify for the World Championships in Fiji next year.

A function for the team was staged at Trotters in St Clair where the netballers basked in the glory of their historic achievenment.

The organisers of the WBA/WBC bout, between Trinidad and Tobago’s Giselle Salandy and American Lisa Holewyne have submitted a budget of more than $200,000 to successfully stage the card.

Potts said yesterday that Government’s contribution will go a long way to helping Salandy captured the double crown and pave the way for future success on the international stage.

“It is vitally important that the contest comes off successfully and that is the reason why Government should take a proactive role since the bout is of international proportions,” said Potts.

Apart from Government, promoters of the bout Unified Boxing Promoters have received the support of the National Lotteries Control Board (NLCB), Hi-Lo Food Stores and Nestor Abraham of Fairchance Racing Pool.
