Sentenced cop attempts suicide

Reports revealed that at about 3 pm Wednesday, Dale Burnett, formerly attached to the Western Division was at the condemned Section in the prison when he broke the light bulb in his cell.

He reportedly used the broken glass to cut his shoulders, arms and neck. According to reports, another prisoner who witnessed the incident alerted prisons guards and the bleeding Burnett was rushed to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital (PoSGH).

He was treated by a doctor and placed on drips.

Yesterday he remained under prisons and police guard at ward 13 of the Port-of-Spain General Hospital.

Burnett told Newsday yesterday that he was frustrated and fed up and decided to end his life.

He added that he was in a lot of pain. The father of one was found guilty of the murder of 18-year old Kevin Cato, whom he shot at the Pier 1 Outrageous Red Fete on January 25, 2004.

On March 21, earlier this year he was sentenced to death for the murder.

He has since appealed the death sentence and is awaiting a court hearing in the matter.
