Rootsman gets award from Hamilton Carnival

The award ceremony took place at Gore Park, Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on August 12. Rootsman was honoured for his contribution for the development of calypso and was complimented for his good compositions by Ling who described him as a “superb composer.” He also complimented the singer for his melodious voice saying that he has a unique way of singing.

On receiving the award Rootsman praised the Hamilton group and noted that it is good to know that people outside of Trinidad and Tobago are noticing the talent of the country. He has been performing for the Hamilton carnival since its inception.

This year’s event was held under the theme “A Caribbean Celebration - Bringing people of all ethnic heritage together through the sharing of cultures.”

Ling said Hamilton carnival began in 2001 and has grown to be one of the biggest events in Ontario.

“This festival is now considered one of the fastest growing carnivals in North America, which is valuable to the local economy,” he pointed out.

Rootsman recently released a CD 30 years of Rootsman to mark his milestone in calypso. He is working on some nation-building songs which he will release for the upcoming Carnival season.

His concentration this year will be on “delinquent youths today.”
