Bajans want to play in Pro League

Rodney Joseph, manager of Spirit of Mount Gay, one of the top teams in Barbados, said that his players were using the team’s recent four-match goodwill tour to Trinidad to impress football scouts from the Pro League. Spirit of Mount Gay, who play in the top Barbados commercial league, won one of their three matches on a ten-day tour.

“We understand that scouts from a few Pro League teams have been watching the matches. We hope that some of our players get the opportunity to attend trials for the clubs to enable them to pursue their careers at a higher and professional level,” he said.

“The standard of play is very good back home, as you can see from the results that the national team has been having in regional competitions. But we need the opportunity to take the football to a higher level,” Joseph said.

Despite controlling most of the match against reigning Eastern Counties champions Mayaro Spurs at the bpTT Mayaro Resource Centre, Spirit of Mount Gay lost 1-2. Carlon Hughes and Sean Reyes netted for Spurs, while Tyron Mayers got the lone item for the Bajans. The Bajan team, under coach Cleveland Holder, featured two national players in their line-up — goalkeeper Benlee Springer and striker Rondell Vaughn. This is the sixth annual goodwill tour of Trinidad by Spirit of Mount Gay.

Razack Jan, organiser of the bpTT Mayaro Football League, said the goodwill matches served as an incentive to the footballers to put their best foot forward.

“We want to thank football coach and administrator, Mohammed Issa, and energy company bpTT for their assistance in staging the match,” Jan added.
