Beetham goes to PM

More than a week ago Beetham residents blocked the Churchill Roosevelt highway and Priority Bus Route to protest the construction of the community centre and conditions of the Beetham area.

A release from the Office of the PM said, “The delegation outlined the difficulties experienced by Beetham residents and indicated that they were considering the establishment of a community secretariat to collect data on the social and community needs of residents in order to assist them.”

The residents were led by Sherma Wilson and Juliet Davy.

Manning promised to convene a meeting this week with a delegation of persons selected by the community, the East Port-of-Spain Development Company and a special purpose State Enterprise established to develop the Morvant/Laventille Community.

The release said representatives from the Ministries of Community Development, Sports, and Social Development will participate in the meeting which will be aimed at formulating “a plan of action on the way forward to address the issues of concern raised by the residents.”

Manning said the Government was committed to bringing about improvements in Beetham Estate and Morvant/Laventille.
