‘UWI Life’ for new students

This orientation programme will not only target first-time UWI students but will also focus on their parents, spouses, family members and close friends. It will consist of three parts over a two-week period.

The first segment will consist with the UWI Life Support Network on August 30 from 5 to 7 pm at the UWI Sport and Physical Education Centre (SPEC). This two-hour programme will target the incoming students’ “support system” — parents, spouses, close relatives. The programme will feature a presentation by psychologist Dr Dianne Douglas and a panel discussion which will enable the new students to learn more about the University.

The UWI Life Student Orientation will then take place on September 1 from 9 am to 3 pm at the same venue. The event will enable new students ro meet key members of the campus staff and management, mingle with new classmates and win great prizes while being entertained by Kes the Band.

The SPEC outdoor courts will also be transformed into an adjoining “village” with a food court and an “Information Village” which will enable students to meet with university representatives to voice their concerns. Traditionally, the UWI Life Student Orientation is hosted by popular media personalities and this year, it promises to be no different.

On September 7 from 6 to 8 pm the UWI life extension will take place at the UWI Learning Resource Centre. This will round off the UWI Life 2006 events. This event will give part-time, mature, distance and postgraduate students the opportunity to learn more about practical ways of exploiting the UWI facilities, resources and services which will help them to balance their family, work and academic life.
